Mr Arjen van den Berg was born in Surinam in 1966. In 1989 he graduated, with distinction, as a Master in Law from the University of Leiden.
At the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of the Tufts University in Boston, USA, he followed the Global Master of Arts Program and achieved his Master’s degree in International Relations in 2004.
In 1991, Mr Van den Berg became a trainee in the Foreign Service Training Course of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, Netherlands. Between 1992 and 2008 he had various assignments in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs including stints at the Legal Department of the Security Policy Department, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Washington DC (Press and Cultural Department) and as Head of Mission in Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.
From 2008 – 2021 he served as Counsellor, Head of Political Development at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Beijing, People’s Republic of China.
From 2012-2015, Mr Van den Berg was Minister Plenipotentiary, Head of Political Development, at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tokyo, Japan.
From 2015 tot 2020, he was Deputy Director, Leader Team 1 (a.o. China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam) at the Asia and Oceania Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Hague, The Netherlands.
Since 2020, Mr Van den Berg serves as Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Hong Kong and Macao.
